UA Local 179 apprentice wins plumbing gold at national competition
June 13, 2013

Saskatoon’s Jason Eidsness-Hodges, a second-year apprentice at UA Local 179, won gold at the 2013 Skills Canada National Competition in Vancouver on June 9, 2013.

Hundreds of people from across the country converged on BC Place in Vancouver to take part in the annual Skills Canada National Competition, the only national, Olympic-style, multi-trade and technology event of its kind for young students and apprentices in the country.

Over 40 different assigned projects were showcased in skilled trade and technology categories. The competitors were evaluated by independent judges from the respective industry sectors, who based their decisions on industry standards and established work practices, including such criteria as quality of work, safety, cleanliness, skill level and creativity.

More than 200 medals were awarded to the top champions in six skilled trade and technology categories: transportation, construction, manufacturing, information and technology, service and employment.

Ever wonder what a Steamfitter does? Our members are some of the highest paid workers in Canada with Steamfitter-Pipefitter being the number one demand for trades workers in the energy sector in the next ten years and beyond.
Come to see our display and talk to our people to experience what other trades we represent and see what a Plumber, HVACR Technician, Welder, and Quality Control Technician does, and we’ll let you in on the kind of future you could have with our organization in one of these trades careers. We will also have an event that will give you an idea of what a Steamfitter-Pipefitter does, which will be part of the Skills Canada competition in the future. Come and see us at the UA Canada booth.
